Metro Homicide is investigating a death at a South Bend motel.
A body was found at one of South Bend's oldest motels, located on U.S. 31.
Police say an employee from the Shirley Hotel found a male in his 50's not breathing in his room.
South Bend police were then called to the scene.
Since the death was deemed "suspicious" in nature, per protocol the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was called out.
Monday night, the South Bend police said the death was being investigated as a "homicide".
Now the coroner must determine the cause of death.
Captain Scott Hanley from the South Bend Police Department says, “It just came in as a male down inside. Our officers arrived, went in and found him down. They found him to be deceased, that's when the phones calls were made for coroner and metro homicide.”
On Wednesday morning, authorities released the name of the male victim. He has been identified as Edward M. Pierce, 56.
An autopsy was conducted, and the forensic pathologist determined the manner of death to be homicide and the cause of death to be sharp force injury.
