On Saturday fireworks restrictions take effect and many folks will be lighting them up as the holiday approaches.

At Phantom Fireworks on State Road 933 they are hoping for a busier season this year compared to last. The burn bans certainly put a damper on business and the chain store lost quite a bit of business.

However Clay Fire Marshal Dave Cherrone reminds folks to use caution no matter what fireworks are used and what the weather conditions are like.

He says to follow the fireworks directions, keep your distance and to keep a hose handy.

Cherrone says, “There's always been some type of house, garage, structure fire, because somebody was firing off devices too close to their neighbors’ property or their own property.”
The fireworks laws in St. Joseph County are stricter than the state's laws.

Special hours are imposed for ten days from June 29th to July 9th.

Fireworks can be used from 5 pm to 11 pm except for the 4th when they can be lit an hour later, until midnight.
