St. Joe County considering polling place location changes

St. Joe County's Vote Center Committee met for a second time today to discuss possible locations.

The group is tasked with studying whether or not the move from polling places to vote centers is best for the county. They are looking into everything from feasibility to the cost of the potential change.

While voters now have just one designated precinct in their neighborhood where they have to vote, vote centers would allow them to vote at any one of a number of polling places that are spread throughout the county.

“People are going to walk to the voting center that maybe they've voted at for 40 or 50 years, and they're going to find the door locked, and they're going to go home and not vote, and that's a sad thing for americans to lose that right,” argues St. Joe County 2nd District Commissioner Dave Thomas.

“I think vote centers make sense. It's an opportunity to increase voter access - I mean right now folks have one place to they can vote on election day,” said St. Joe County 1st District Commissioner Andy Kostielney. “We're going to hopefully give them 25, 30 if not more than that. We're going to make it easier to vote, hopefully we can save some money in the process. So i think for the most part, it'll be a win-win for the community.”

Tonight's meeting drew so many residents that they had to move the location to council chambers.
