South Bend's new police chief walks crime beat

For the first time since arriving in South Bend, newly-appointed Police Chief Ron Teachman walked a beat.

On Friday, Teachman and Mayor Pete Buttigieg went on a joint crime walk in downtown South Bend.

“There are many police department that are still stuck in the old way of doing business building a 911 system putting our officers in service getting a call and them responding to that call,” said Teachman, “that is the old way of doing it, the right way I think is to front load the resources to prevention and intervention and only make arrests and only use law enforcement as a last resort.”

Teachman was once the police chief in New Bedford Massachusetts.
