South Bend District 11 Softball returned home Sunday night as Senior League World Series Champions for the 2nd year in a row.
The Senior league team, comprised of players ages 14-16, defeated Montana 5-0 Saturday afternoon in Delaware to repeat as World Series champion. The game aired live on ESPN.
Pitcher Nicole Kirkpatrick was outstanding for South Bend, striking out six batters and giving up just two hits in a 7-inning shutout. 3rd baseman Allysa Gutierrez made the catch on a foul ball to end the game and the celebration was on.
South Bend plated its first run on a passed ball in the 4th inning. Speedy Mackenzie Shields came in to score to put District 11 up 1-0.
South Bend continue to generate runs thanks to small ball in a 3-run 5th inning that was capped by an RBI single from Jordyn Westphal.
Derek Hicks is the manager for the South Bend team. His assistants are Douglas Kazmierczak and Matthew Kirkpatrick.
