South Bend has changed the name of the downtown's main thoroughfare!

With the University of Michigan football team due to hit town this weekend, city officials thought it would be appropriate to re-name Michigan Street to Fighting Irish Drive.

Deputy Mayor Mark Neal says, “The reason is we're very proud of our football team here, and it seems only appropriate that Michigan Street would be renamed Fighting Irish \Drive this week for this weekend's game.”

This is not the first time the city has temporarily renamed Michigan Street.

It happened two years ago: the last time the Irish hosted Michigan.

The Irish won that game 13-6.
The name change will be temporary.
