A local baseball team is helping raise awarness for a nation-wide organization that raises money for pregnancy and baby-health.
Coveleski Stadium, home to the South Bend Silver Hawks, will now be home to this year's March for Babies event in April. The event is part of the nation-wide, non-profit organization, March of Dimes.
March of Dimes Northern Indiana Division named Joe Hart, the president of the South Bend Silver Hawks, 2013's March for Babies Revenue Chair in St. Joseph County. Hart says he plans to use the baseball team to raise awarness and help promote the event.
Wednesday morning, Hart hosted a "Community Leadership Breakfast" at the Upper Deck at the Cove inviting corporate leaders, organizations and individuals from the community to work with him throughout and during the event.
"Being new to the community, I certainly support the cause," said Hart. "I had some good friends, without the help of March of Dimes, their 3 little ones probably wouldn't be around today. So for me, it was very near and dear to me. Given the opportunity, I thought I'd help out as much as I can. Through the use of the Cove and the Silver Hawks it was just another way to help get the word out," said Hart.
Organizers expect some 800 walkers to take part in this year's march and have high hopes of raising $95,000.
The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health, with active chapters across the country. March for Babies is the organization's largest fundraiser. The organization works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
March for Babies in St. Joseph County takes place on Saturday, April 27.
