South Bend officer firing upheld
The South Bend Board of Public Safety today upheld the firing of police officer Christopher Bortone.
In the process, the board made public a long list of disciplinary actions taken against Bortone, dating back to 2005.
Ironically, Bortone was named the department’s Officer of the Year in 2007.
Today, he was officially fired for lying.
Bortone’s most recent misbehavior took place in March when he failed to file a police report—after answering a theft call at a big box store.
During the investigation, Bortone lied to superiors—saying that the store’s loss prevention officer requested that a report not be filed.
Findings of Fact in the case approved by the board of safety today document eight separate disciplinary measures taken against Bortone—dating back to 2005.
During that time, Bortone received five separate suspensions—for a total of 49-days.
