A South Bend man says he has paused his trip down the Mississippi River after his kayak was tampered with this week in Iowa.

The Hawk Eye reports John Hatch started a nearly 1,600-mile journey on August 1 in Red Wing, Minnesota to help raise money for breast cancer research.

Hatch says after paddling for 28 miles on the river on Monday, he docked his kayak at a Burlington port.

He says he returned the next morning to find his boat was eight inches deep in water. His sleeping bag, first aid kit and other equipment were ruined. He says one of his hatch covers is missing on his kayak.

Hatch's goal is to reach New Orleans by October.
