Keeping kids engaged in the classroom.
It's a problem all teachers face but one teacher believes a solution starts at the very beginning.
Swanson Primary kindergarten teacher, Sue Panzica, has been named Teacher of the Year in South Bend. She's been teaching for 37 years, 20 of them have been in kindergarten.
Although she has a PH-D in early childhood development and has taught graduate students, she says kindergarten students are her favorite.
“They make me laugh every day. There isn't a day where they don't make me laugh, it really is the best job,” says Panzica.
She believes it's her responsibility to engage students in life-long learning the minute they start going to school.
“The role of a teacher is crucial to a child's life. They spend so much time in a classroom with a teacher and Mrs. Panzica does that with each of her students,” says Swanson Primary Principal Wendy Folk.
Next, Panzica will be eligible for Teacher of the Year across the state.
