South Bend School Board could censure one of its own

The South Bend School Board is trying to censure one of its own.

Board President Roger Parent is calling a special meeting on Nov. 9 to discuss what he says is unethical behavior by the board’s vice president, Bill Sniadecki.

At that meeting, board members will be asked to vote on a resolution to censure Sniadecki and strip him of his title.

There’s been tension between outspoken Sniadecki and several members of the board for quite some time.

In September, Sniadecki claimed the board acted illegally during an executive session.

That accusation led Roger Parent and board secretary Michelle Engel to demand an apology from Sniadecki; they also asked him to resign as vice president.

But, Sniadecki did neither.

In the hefty, 40-page meeting packet for Nov. 9, nearly a dozen incidents are detailed where Sniadecki allegedly acted out of line.

Among the accusations, Sniadecki allegedly delivered confidential interview documents to current Superintendent Carole Schmidt before she interviewed for the position.

“That’s false accusations,” Sniadecki said. “Number one, them questions are standardized questions. And, if she thought it was unethical, she should have brought it up a year and a half ago when it happened.”

But, the accusations go beyond just violating board policy.

Several incidents are detailed where Sniadecki is accused of intimidating or harassing corporation employees – some to the point they feared for their safety.

“Some things in there are true, that I get irritated every once in a while,” Sniadecki said. “I don’t yell – I raise my voice – but I don’t feel it’s yelling. I never threatened anybody. I never thought I was anyway intimidating. I speak the truth. I guess if I got one fault, that’s it.”

But, it will be up to the rest of the board to decide whether Sniadecki’s faults warrant censure and the removal of his vice president title.

If the board votes in favor of the resolution, Sniadecki will still be a voting member of the board.
