South Bend firefighters pride themselves on quick emergency response, but an overhead fire station garage door recently stopped time.
On Thanksgiving morning, South Bend Quint One (a hybrid between a ladder truck and fire engine) was responding to a reported apartment fire, when an electrical short caused Station One's center garage door to lower unexpectedly.
It pinned down the quint as it exited the garage, shattering glass and twisting metal.
Usually, the door doesn't lower without the use of a remote control -- something firefighters say they never touched.
Damage to Quint One was minimal.
And, that's good news; it's the department's newest vehicle.
