The South Bend Common Council reviewed the complaint against one of its members during a special meeting. The rules committee decided to send the issue for further review by the council attorney.
Councilman Henry Davis Jr. filed the complaint after Councilman Fred Ferlic said he looked like a drug dealer following a budget discussion. It's unusual for another council member to file a formal complaint against another, but the rules committee says they're here to handle these situations.
“I think any time there's a complaint, I think that's serious,” says Common Council member Derek Dieter. “The rules committee is there for rules of the council, whether it be decorum, this type of thing, procedural aspects of the council. This is one of the things that would fall into the rules committee.”
Davis also filed a complaint against Interim Police Chief Chuck Hurley. The Mayor's Chief of Staff, Mike Schmuhl, says they've referred the incident to the city attorney before they weigh their options.
