One man is dead after a single engine plane crashed in Starke County, near the airport in Knox.

According to our reporting partners at WKVI, the pilot was 68-year-old James A.W. Evans III, of Stafford, Virgina. The Starke County Coroner, Kris Rannells, says it appears Evans died instantly. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The plane crashed around 2:50 p.m., about 20 yards off of State Road 8 along the south end of the Starke County Airport in a cornfield. The air craft was a single engine RV-6 Vanns airplane.

WKVI reports the man was flying to Oshkosh, Wisconsin from Virginia. He was stopping at the Starke County Airport for fuel. The pilot was the only occupant in the plane, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the scene to investigate what caused the crash.
