It was a fun time out at the ballpark for a special group of Silver Hawks fans Saturday night.
The Indiana Department of Child Services teamed up with South Bend's minor league team to celebrate Michiana's Foster Families, and hopefully recruit some more. They were offered discounted tickets for "Foster Family Night" at the Cove.
The families got some bonding time in as they watched the Silver Hawks face off against the Bowling Green Hot Rods, and one lucky foster child was even given the honor of throwing out the first pitch.
“We want our kids when they do have to go into foster care to just transition to a home seamlessly and just do things that normal kids do like come out to the ballpark, spend the night at their friend's house, you know, have dinner with their family at night,” said Mary Ellen Hanback a Foster Care Licensing Specialist.
Box seat tickets for foster families were $5 Saturday night, instead of the usual $8.
And Mary Ellen notes that there are about 200 foster families in St. Joseph County, but they can always use more dedicated parents to give these children a home.
