While the Irish football team is getting ready to kick off their season, the Silver Hawks are wrapping up theirs.
South Bend's minor league team played their final home game of the season Friday night at Coveleski Stadium.
It was a bittersweet ending to an incredibly successful year for the Silver Hawks.
New management, along with off-season stadium improvements designed to make the Cove more family friendly helped draw larger crowd, and allowed them to surpass their entire 20-11 attendance total by nearly 70,000 fans.
Friday night, it was all about giving back to the community that's supported them all year with all kinds of giveaways and one of the biggest fireworks shows in the Cove's history.
Silver Hawks President Joe Hart says they're already looking forward to next year.
"We had a phenomenal year, but there's that excitement about now we have the off-season to truly plan on how we can build on this year and make next year even better. So it's a great year, great community, and couldn't be any happier,” he said.
And the Silver Hawks had something else to celebrate Friday night.
The team learned Friday morning that they're the recipient of ballpark digest's "Renovation of the Year Award" for the more than $4 million dollars in improvements made to the stadium in 2012.
