Elkhart County Fair officials said the lessons learned from last year's deadly state fair stage collapse played a role in Thursday’s decision to evacuate the grandstands ahead of severe weather.

Before the storms made their way east to the Goshen fairgrounds, their emergency director said he ordered evacuations of the grandstands because he feared lightning might strike fairgoers.

He said most of their emergency procedures were in place before last August when high winds toppled the state fair stage killing seven people and injuring dozens more.

But he said Elkhart County's fair now uses a private meteorological service to monitor weather which was one of the recommendations made by a company that investigated the deadly collapse.
