Sesame Street's "Maria" speaks at Saint Mary's commencement ceremony

Saint Mary’s College started to wrap up its school year Sunday, May 5, with a day full of commencement students for graduating seniors.

Sonia Manzano, also known as Maria, the actress from Sesame Street, sat at the sixth annual Saint Mary’s multicultural graduation ceremony to honor the 2013 graduates in the student center lounge.

Maria spoke to the multicultural group about making the transition into adulthood and moving into the next phase of life after their college career concludes.

Students listened intently as she spoke about her background growing up in the south Bronx of New York. She related their hard work and challenges they have overcome to similar experiences in her own life.
“But I think that the world they're going into is much more diverse and open about diversity. And the fact that they're going participate in society openly is going to make profound impact on the way we live and the way we see race relations."

After her speech Sonia congratulated and applauded the 51 members of the group.
