Among the controversial issues on the docket for the South Bend School Board on Monday night was a decision on whether or not to renew its contract with local alternative school The Crossing.
In the past, students who have not been successful in South Bend schools have gone to The Crossing for help. But the school corporation’s contract with the alternative school expired last month.
The item was not on the meeting agenda, but several people spoke out asking the board to partner back up with The Crossing because it’s in the best interest of the students.
“To give a kid a chance, a hope out of life,” said State Representative Dale Devon. “That's what we're trying to do. Give kids life. Take them out of the system, out of the court system.”
After hearing several people speak, the board voted 5-2 to recommend that the superintendent try to negotiate a contract with The Crossing that can be presented to them as soon as possible.
