Save money on your taxes

SOUTH BEND For anyone hoping to claim charitable donations on taxes for 2013, the deadline is fast approaching. But, it's not too late to give back and qualify for a deduction.

People have until December 31st, to make a monetary or material donation. Organizations must be approved by the IRS to qualify for a deduction.

Bob York, an area tax expert, shared a helpful checklist with 16 Morning News, to use before the end of the year.

Before you claim a charitable act on your tax forms,

Does it qualify with the IRS?
Do you have a receipt from the organization?
Do you have a credit card statement if you paid by card?
Do you have a cancelled check to prove the date?

York pointed out several other eligible tax deductions:

-14 cents a mile when driving to and from volunteering
-Any related products purchased for a non-profit organization
-credit card charges to eligible organizations made by Dec. 31, even those that have not been paid off

Things that are not deductible are:
-giving to a family, or anyone not registered with the IRS
-value of your time, for example, hourly wage when missing work to volunteer
-personal items purchased while volunteering, for example, a meal

For more information or to see if an organization qualifies, check the IRS website.
