When the Elkhart Police Dept. found out their fellow officer was diagnosed with Cancer last month, they wasted no time rallying support.
At an event held on Saturday, officers raised money to defray the medical costs of 15-year veteran of the department, Sgt. Scott Hupp.
Friends and fellow officers manned the grill all day long and threw a benefit in Hupp’s honor Saturday night. Organizers say they served up thousands of steaks to help raise money for Hupp’s escalating medical costs.
According to Sgt. Wayne Bias, they ordered 3,500 steaks just for the occasion, and by the afternoon the crowds were making a dent in the food.
“He can feel the love that everybody's pouring out on him,” says Sgt. Bias, “He loves the fact people are showing up. Officers from all over are showing up , people that he's helped that you don’t expect a thank you from are coming out just to say thank you now and just to help pay his bills. “
The community showed their support in ways other than attendance as well. Sgt. Bias says many people donated cakes and desserts, and even donated the steaks themselves for the fundraiser.
“What a blessing to have people like that. To be able to know, the joy is ours. If we can do anything to support our family... Scott and Leah are some of the greatest people there are,” says Wayne Stutsman, a family friend of the Hupps.
