Saint Joseph High School holds Dedication Mass for new chapel

Months after the opening of the new Saint Joseph High School in downtown South Bend, students and faculty finally got to step inside the school's new chapel.

Although it's bigger than the chapel at the school's old address, there were hardly any seats left for the Dedication Mass Wednesday night.

"It's pretty exciting because we've been waiting for so long for it to open," said student Christy Bythrow. "We've been seeing the construction workers and stuff."

The Mass was led by Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who played a large part in the chapel's construction.

He wanted the space to inspire students.

"I think because it's so beautiful, students will be more likely to stop in and say a prayer," Bishop Rhoades said.

The new chapel features stained glass artwork and large paintings depicting the life of Saint Joseph.

And, it sits in the center of campus.

"This chapel is really the heart of our school, the center of our school, it's what we're all about," said Principal Susan Richter. "It's where Jesus lives, where students can go to worship and pray."
