Many students don't usually like to sit in the classroom during their summer break but on Friday in Elkhart, Math and Science were exchanged for fun ways on how to stay safe.

This morning, nearly 100 students gathered at Growing Kids Learning Center in Elkhart for a camp put on by safe kids of Elkhart County.

The students - ages 4 to 12 - were put into groups while learning about pet safety, fire safety, and even how to stay flexible with the help of a yoga instructor.

They were able to interact with a police dog and also learn more about bike safety but organizers say much of child safety starts with the parents.

“We want to try and bring them in and we encourage them to take a look at our Facebook page,” said Trevor Wendzonka with Safe Kids Elkhart County.

“We post safety tips and those types of things, any recalls, and we really want to do more in that regard,” said Sarah Majewski, a 6th grade camper.

He added, “To be safe on a bike you have to wear stuff that lights up and make sure you have bright clothes and to check and make sure everything is working on your bike.”

The students also met with employees from Elkhart General Hospital to learn more about how to stay safe in the sun.
