A police officer was the victim in crash this weekend.

Now, the man who was behind the wheel of the car that struck the officer has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Carl Sabinas, 29, has also been charged with operating a vehicle with a BAC of .15 or more.

A higher charge may be added -- depending on the extent of the officer's injuries.

This all happened early Sunday morning near the area of Douglas and State Road 23.

St. Joseph County police officer Matt Parmelee was there responding to a crash.

He was standing on the running board of a tow truck when Sabinas allegedly hit the tow truck and threw the officer from the truck.

The crash happened shortly after a woman reportedly drove her car into a tree at the same intersection.

Both the drivers and Parmelee were taken to the hospital for their injuries.
