Police are looking into why a South Bend woman drove erratically Tuesday afternoon, nearly killing herself while heading south on Portage Avenue.
An elderly South Bend woman managed to step down hard on her accelerator and accidentally used a roundabout as a ramp after driving into it head-on. She was airborne over the intersection and landed on the other side.
Police say the woman driving a white Toyota started to bump the curb about a block north of the roundabout at Portage and Ribourde Drive. That’s when witnesses noticed something suspicious.
Then moments later the woman drove into the roundabout. She was driving so fast she flew over it and landed on the other side. Upon impact when landing on the other side, the car flipped over and finally stopped.
Witnesses also told police they say her rear end another red car several times. The driver of the red car quickly left the scene for unknown reasons.
“We've been given indications by other witnesses that this vehicle made contact with a red vehicle further north,” says Sgt. Gene Eyster from the South Bend Police Department. “That vehicle has left the scene. If there any additional witness that would like to contact us with information we would appreciate that.”
As part of the investigation police impounded the vehicle to see if there were any mechanical errors.
The woman is in serious condition at the hospital and recovering.
She told police she doesn't remember anything. Her son told officers she doesn’t have any medical problems that could cause her to lose consciousness.
