Ribbon cutting at new senior housing

A new, low-income senior living complex was dedicated today during a ribbon cutting ceremony in Mishawaka.

Mayor Wood was among many guests at the presentation, along with presidents of housing projects across the nation.

The Ceremony welcomed new residents to the Penelope 60 Apartments and thanked those who made the project possible.

Those sponsors include AHEPA, the National Housing Corporation and the Daughters of Penelope, among many.

Daughters of Penelope, a Greek-American women's group is a non-for profit organization that had much to do with the development.

AHEPA/D.O.P. 60 President Angelika Magrames hosted the ceremony and was a major mastermind behind the development. She says without the support from the community the project would not have been possible.

"Our organization was going to fold. And instead of letting it fold I went out and actively recruited new members for the organization, and I told them I had a dream, I wanted to build a housing project, would they help me?All of the people i asked said absolutely yes," Magrames said.

She also said her facility is extremely environmentally friendly and that many other housing projects are looking to theirs for guidance. She says the new tenants are pleased to call Penelope 60 home.

"They have come up personally and told me thank you this is the best place we've ever lived in. They enjoy the facilities they can use. They have a fire place lounge. They have a community kitchen they can use and meet with their families, and they enjoy the safety of it too," said Magrames.

She says Friday's ceremony was dedicated to the tenants.
