Residents escape second fire at South Bend home

Firefighters are investigating a second fire at a South Bend home.

It happened in the 900-block of Sprucewood Ln. in South Bend around 9 p.m..

The family is renting the home. They say they believe the fire started in the basement and it is not the first time.

A fire in their home that took place about a year ago, started from a faulty ceiling fan.

But this time, family members say they are just happy everyone got out safely.

“ Well, they (husband and daughter) were asleep, and the dog was barking. I was at work,” said tenant Felicia Williams. “My husband called me, and was like, ’the house is on fire again. It started in the basement.’ They were asleep, the dog was barking.

“My daughter reacted, she jumped up. She said there was a thick cloud of smoke, so she went outside, got out of the house, and she said she could see flames coming from her basement window, so she busted the window with the water hose, and put it out as much as she could before the fire trucks came.”

The fire remains under investigation.
