One local non-profit group got a major surprise Friday that will help lessen its financial burden.
Reins of Life, in South Bend, was awarded a $10,000 check by Liberty Mutual employees. The company selected Reins of Life as one of 100 organizations to receive grants nationwide.
“It’s really the great work they do, just an amazing charitable organization,” said Steve Vanderhagen, from Liberty Mutual.
The donation comes at the perfect time as Reins of Life staff was struggling to meet their budget constraints.
“The budget was really tight and we were not going to make our budget,” said Cathy Alwine, director of development at Reins of Life. “The question was how far short we were going to be.”
Staff members at Reins of Life thought that the Liberty Mutual employees were only there to donate their time.
But, just before the afternoon crew got to work, they made a special delivery.
“I was floored,” said Christine Flowers, program administrator at Reins of Life. “One of the best ways to end a week.”
Flowers said it was heartwarming to be recognized without even having to go through an application process.
“We do this out of the love of our hearts,” Flowers said. “We love our horses, riders, our volunteers. We don’t expect the awards and to have a surprise like that... it’s really touching.”
