Red Cross reports nationwide blood shortage

As the summer gets underway, there is a nationwide shortage of blood.

Right now, the American Red Cross says they are about 50,000 units of blood short nationwide.

At the St. Joseph County Red Cross, they are about 10% less than this time last year.

One of the main reasons for the shortage is summer plans.

"So there's a concern that with the holiday weekend coming up, we really need to ramp it up and let people know…if you are making plans, please include giving blood in that,” said . “If you already have an appointment, please keep that appointment, because your blood can help save lives.

You can schedule to donate blood at the American Red Cross.
