South Bend, Ind. If it's delicious home-grown produce you desire, you'll want to head to Downtown South Bend on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
The Purple Porch Co-Op celebrated the grand opening of its local food market at its new location on Hill Street Wednesday.
It's a chance for producers to talk to shoppers about their product, and an opportunity for the grower to educate the buyer about their foods.
Purple Porch has grown to more than 20 regular producers, and 325 member owners. The farmers come from a 60 mile radius around South Bend, generating dollars for our area.
“You know a lot of them struggle to find a place that's good for them and we're really happy to have a place for these local producers that can sell their food and get a very good price for it,” says Greg Koehler the general manager of the Purple Porch Co-Op. “We pride ourselves on having most of the food dollar going straight to the producer.”
The co-op invites the public to come Downtown on Saturday mornings and Wednesday nights.
And with more donations their local foods farmer's market is hoping to open on a daily basis in late summer or early fall.
