Police: man attempts to set fire to house with two inside

A Benton Township man is in jail after police say he tried to set a house on fire with two people trapped inside.

It happened Tuesday at the home of Sandra Banks in the 900-block of Chicago Avenue in Benton Harbor.

Police say Banks' nephew, Melvin Polk, 52, got into an argument with her earlier in the day.

He then returned to the home when his girlfriend and banks were inside, and poured gasoline in front of the door, trapping them inside.

Thankfully, his lighter failed and Polk ran from the scene. Police caught him two blocks away.

Officers were unsure what started the argument.
