A man was taken to the hospital Thursday night after reportedly being shot in the hip at a gas station.

But before the ambulance picked him up, the victim, Tyrone Robert Morris, 25, made his way over to a nearby Elkhart neighborhood looking for help.

Police were called to the Marathon gas station in the 200 block of W. Hively Ave. in Elkhart shortly after 9 p.m. A caller told police there was a fight, adding that one of the individuals involved was armed and discharged their weapon.

By the time police arrived, Morris was no longer on the scene. Morris got in a green Ford sedan and drove about 0.8 miles to the 100 block of Cleveland Ave. seeking the assistance of a friend.

“He hollered for help, ‘I’ve been hurt, oh my God I’ve been hurt’” Willie Toliver heard the sound of Morris’ car and his desperate cries for assistance outside her house.

When she opened the door to let Morris in, Toliver said he was too badly injured to walk up the steps without assistance.

“I went into shock myself,” Toliver added she was surprised to see Morris in the condition he was in.
