Police are asking for the public’s help in tracking down a pair of thieves whose crimes have cost the city of Mishawaka roughly $24,000 by stealing nearly 50 sewer grates since July.

In at least one of these incidents, witnesses reported seeing two white men swipe them from area streets.

But investigators have yet to get any solid leads in the case.

“This clearly goes beyond mischief,” said Lt. Cindy Kilgore, coordinator for Michiana Crime Stoppers. “There's obviously some financial gain, and this is actually kind of a new one to me. But I think they're made of some kind of iron, perhaps a composite, so there must be some scrap value to this.”

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP or (800) 242-STOP. Tipsters remain completely anonymous and can potentially earn a cash reward.
