UPDATE: New information on Dowagiac High gun find


The Dowagiac High School student arrested after police found weapons in his truck in the school parking lot did not intend to cause harm, his mother today told News Center 16.

The student is a past state champion trap shooter who typically practices twice a week. The mother said the weapons were “broke down” and in cases.

The Dowagiac School Resource Officer received a tip Wednesday that the 17 –year-old student had guns and ammunition in his vehicle.

Police worked with school administrators to contact the teen, and then searched his car, finding a rifle and shotgun along with ammunition for both weapons as well as a knife.

The teen was arrested and taken to the Cass County Jail, to await arraignment on charges of Carrying a Weapon with Unlawful Intent, Possession of a Weapon in a Weapons Free School Zone, and Felony Firearms charges.
