Police: alcohol and speed blamed in fatal overnight crash

Speed and alcohol appear to be the primary culprit in a single car crash that killed a local man, and severely injured his passenger.

The Sturgis Police Department was called to the corner of E. Hatch St. and Jean St. around 12:22 a.m. Saturday for the wreck. Responding officers found two men inside the vehicle.

The driver, Mark Edmisten, 28, of Sturgis (pictured) was already dead. His passenger, Juan Carlos Ortiz, 42, also of Sturgis, was hanging on by a thread.

A medical helicopter flew that passenger to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich. in critical condition. His current condition is not known.

Police say both men weren't wearing their seat belts. That’s a violation of Michigan state law.

Sturgis Fire and Rescue, LifeCare Ambulance and West Michigan Air Care assisted in the crash.
