INDIANAPOLIS (AP) State police are warning people about a scam where someone posing as a law enforcement officer calls someone and threatens to arrest the victim if they don't pay a fine for some fabricated crime or debt.

State police say a state police detective recently had a message threatening such an arrest left on voicemail. Police say the caller often have some personal information about the victim, which makes the caller seem more legitimate.

Indiana state police Sgt. Trent Smith says it is hard to trace such calls because most originate from cell phones all over the United States. He says a well-informed public is the best defense in combating such scams.
