Police ID student in Friday's deadly crash

Police have released the name of the teenage girl who died Friday after a tragic accident near Elkhart Municipal Airport.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. on John Weaver Parkway between County Road 6 and County Road 10, and involved a car and an SUV.

The crash left a portion of the parkway closed for over three hours.

Police say Maria Ramirez was sent to the hospital, where she later died of multiple blunt force injuries.

The Memorial High School Freshman was riding in the passenger seat of a car driven by Christian Castro when the accident occurred.

Castro was also taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.

The driver of the SUV was treated and released.
