LUDINGTON, Mich Police assisted by dozens of volunteers have wrapped up a two-day collection of plants in northern Michigan, evidence that could help solve the mystery of a missing baby.
Chief Deputy Bob Brown of the Mason County sheriff's office says the search exceeded expectations Saturday. He says the area where Katherine Phillips' remains may be has been significantly reduced.
"Baby Kate" was 4 ½ months old when she disappeared in the Ludington area in 2011. Investigators believe seeds and other material on the shoes of her father could be crucial to the location of the body.
Brown says scientists will compare it to the plants and moss collected in Mason County's Grant Township. Sean Phillips has not been charged with his daughter's death but is in prison on a related conviction.
