A South Bend man is fighting for his life after he was found unconscious in his crashed van Saturday morning.
At around 8:00 a.m., the St. Joseph County Police Dept. arrived at the accident after a passerby reported a single vehicle crash along the 22,700 block of Madison Rd.
Officers found Rodney Murphy, 27, unconscious and trapped inside the van. They say the Murphy was heading westbound on Madison when his van swerved off the road and slammed into a tree.
Murphy was extricated from the van and taken to Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The latest report indicates Murphy was suffering from hypothermia in addition to sustaining a serious head injury which required him to undergo immediate surgery.
There has been no word yet as to whether or not Murphy was wearing a seat belt, or if drugs and alcohol were involved. Murphy’s brother tells NewsCenter 16 the crash occurred more than four hours before he was discovered.
