Paddlefest splashes into South Bend

South Bend, Ind. Dozens of racers came out to kayak and canoe on the St. Joseph River this morning.

Today was the 12th Annual South Bend Paddlefest at St. Patrick's Park.

Gates opened at 7 a.m. and a lot of people came early to get in the water.

Families, couples, friends and even individual racers came to compete against one another.

The water level was a bit high this year, but that didn't stop the dozens of people who had already registered to kayak down the river.

"What's great about this sport is as excited as these people get to see these pros come out here from all over the place, there's way more excitement from some of these folks from their family members that are maybe competing in their first canoeing and kayak race,” said race organizer Matt Meersman. “The crowd will go crazy because they just made it up to the top and back. or they got a 6 year old kid in there who just beat two adults. and its a really family friendly environment."
