Owner of five horses being charged with animal cruelty in Starke County

Numerous calls came in to authorities in Knox when five horses were loose on a roadway Sunday night. Now, their owner is being charged with animal cruelty.

At least two of these horses appeared to be in bad physical shape. All five had gotten out of their fences and were in the road. They were all picked up by the Sheriff's Department.

The Starke County Prosecutor says that the number of concerned citizens calling in with concern for the horses' well-being is what made the county take action.

“The fact that there had been multiple calls involving these animals and citizen's reactions to seeing the physical conditions that at least two of the horses were in the neglected element of the crime that is part of the charge,” says Nicholas Bourff, Starke County Prosecutor. “To my knowledge this is the first time we have dealt with these particular issues, with these five horses, this is the first time any criminal charges have been filed on them.”

The horses are being temporarily cared for by a member of the Starke County Sheriff's Posse.
