Traffic was backed up for miles Friday night on the Indiana Toll Road after an accident near New Carlisle involving a jeep and a semi.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. between mile markers 59 and 60. That's just west of the St. Joseph County and LaPorte County line.

Emergency crews on the scene say it appears the truck driver cut off the other vehicle in the westbound lanes of the interstate.

The impact of the collision sent the Jeep off the highway and left the driver trapped inside.

“The car got pushed off the road by a semi, and the car went off the road and pretty much took the front half of the truck and pushed it into the driver,” describes Assistant Chief Jamie Middlebrook of the New Carlisle New Carlisle Fire Department.

The driver of the Jeep was flown to the hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Both the east and westbound lanes of the Toll Road were shut down while MEDFLIGHT responded to the scene, but all lanes have since reopened to traffic.

The semi driver wasn't hurt, but a passenger in the truck was treated by EMS on the scene for minor cuts.
