It happened around 2:30 Friday morning near the intersection of Michigan and Bronson.

28-year old Sandra Wirick from South Bend had to be cut from her car.

Wirick had multiple injuries, but the extent is unknown.

Investigators aren't sure what happened that caused the woman to crash into the beam.

"That beam is there to support that bridge so it's going to be a lot more indestructible than the vehicle,” said Battalion Chief Carl Buchanon. “The vehicle is just plastic and soft metal so upon impact that fiberglass is going to wrap up like foil.”

The woman was taken to the hospital but her condition is unknown.

An investigation is underway.
