ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. One person is dead after a head-on collision in St. Joseph County.

It happened around 10 p.m. in the 25300 block of U.S. 20 West, near Poppy Road.

Police say a silver Pontiac Aztek was heading westbound on U.S. 20, and a red GMC truck was driving eastbound. The pick-up truck then veered over into the other lane and struck the Aztek head-on.

57-year-old Patrick Beecher from South Bend was driving the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Zachary Myers, 22, of New Carlisle, was behind the wheel of the Aztek. He walked away from the crash with no injuries.

"There is some indication that alcohol may be a factor," explained St. Joseph County Police Department Assistant Chief Bill Thompson. "But before we can make a solid determination on that, we'll have to wait for toxicology results and some other investigations."

About a mile section of U.S. 20 West around the crash scene was shut down for more than three hours.
