It's known as the SafeAuto Insurance "Do the Jingle" contest. It’s a national competition where participants write their own catchy tune, and the jingle with the most votes gets a spot in a well-publicized commercial.
More than 200 people entered in the contest, but as of Sunday, one Michiana resident is in the top ten.
Elkhart resident Steve Somerville has been a fan of music forever. He raps, he writes and he gives the saxophone a little go sometimes.
So it’s no surprise that it’s his talent that has gotten him this far.
“My son hit the record button and he said, hey you know are you still going to enter that contest, it was like the day before that we entered the day before the deadline, and I said ya,” says Steve.
But this isn't “Big Steves” first rodeo when it comes to contests.
“I think I started this rap thing and getting into contest probably around 1989, but the one officially was in 1990…I have actually been in a few and gotten two first place and one second place in one so,” continues Steve.
So, you want to know the secret to all his luck?
“This couch that has been with me through a few moves and everything and I guess I baby it. Probably one of the only people that sit on it and it is just lucky for me,” says Steve.
“Even when friends come over we can’t even sit in here and talk,” adds Steve’s son, Stevo
Even though Steve is in the top 10, he is still more that 280,000 votes behind first place.
If you want to vote for Steve go to www.dothejingle.com and search for Big Steve.
Your last chance to vote is midnight on Thursday.
