Notre Dame sent the following message to students Friday:

Dear Students,

As you may have heard, power is out in downtown South Bend, resulting in the temporary closure of several businesses. The outage has not affected university operations, nor will it cause changes to this weekend’s commencement events.

City officials have told the university that generators are being brought in to restore power to key areas downtown, and that they are confident the hotels and restaurants that you and your families may be patronizing this weekend will be back in operation by this afternoon.

However, we ask that you make your family and other guests aware of this situation so that they can contact restaurants and/or hotels where they may have reservations to be sure they are open. Phone numbers for many establishments are on the Downtown South Bend website at:

Should your guests end up in need of housing, the university has residence hall rooms available at $40 per person. In addition, a limited number of meal tickets for the dining halls also are available, as are meal purchases by cash or credit card. You or they can call 574-631-7640 to make arrangements.
