Northshore Apartments damaged by fire

Quick action spared a South Bend apartment complex from total destruction.

Around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, a fire sparked at the Northshore Apartment complex in the 14-hundred-block of Northside Boulevard.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the third floor of the building.

Crews fought flames inside and cut holes in the roof for ventilation after the fire spread to the attic.

Twelve apartment units had some sort of damage but thankfully every tenant escaped unharmed.

"Clearly the occupants called 911 quickly,” says Chief Stephen Cox from the South Bend Fire Department. “(It) affected our ability to get in there and put the fire out."

One resident was reunited with his cat in the parking lot after he was worried the cat might have died in the fire.

The fire remains under investigation tonight.
