Northridge High School senior charged in cafeteria attack

A Middlebury teen accused of bringing a handgun to Northridge High School, has been formally charged.

J'wan Brewer, 18, is facing one count of Battery and Intimidation, both are Class A misdemeanors.

It is alleged Brewer manhandled another male student in the school cafeteria on Jan. 18, following a dispute over Brewer's girlfriend. The unidentified student claimed Brewer also pulled out a handgun during the attack.

Despite that firsthand account, the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office says there is not enough evidence to prove Brewer brought a weapon onto school grounds.

Brewer, a recent transfer student from the Indianapolis area, will make his first court appearance at the Elkhart Magistrate Court on April 12 at 8:30 a.m.
