Some students in Niles were taken back to the olden days. Second grade classes at Merritt Elementary celebrated Colonial Day Tuesday.
The group did everything from churning butter to making rag dolls, and even a little bit of sewing.
“A lot of the kids love the sewing and it was just a lot of fun to do with them but when you say to them, just think if you had to sew all the clothes you had on right now, what that would be like, it kind of gives them awareness of what it was like,” said second grade teacher Jan Oltman.
Teachers used the day to give students a hands-on experience of life during the colonial period.
It also helped to meet some of the Michigan state objectives for social studies.
