New technology from Google finds its way to Michiana classroom

Google Glass is now in Michiana.

Google's newest product lets you instantly access information – video, files or even a Google search. And one local teacher is using it to change the way things are done in the classroom.

“The way we use technology is shifting,” said Penn High School teacher Grant Carlile.

He says that the lenses will change the way he interacts with students.

“I would be able to do attendance, augment presentations with notes and give them grades on Glass,” Carlile said.

With voice and movement commands, Carlile will be able to do even more during class time.

“Project based learning is what we're all about and having opportunity to be at desk with student allows me to do things on the fly that I would otherwise have to wait for,” he said. “Be one on one with them then go back later and give them a grade.”

These ideas gave Carlile the opportunity to get Glass in the first place. A tweet that he sent to Google with the hashtag “If I had Glass” started a process which ended with Carlile being chosen as a “Google Explorer” for the product.

The moment his students found out, he was flooded with ideas.

“They want to link it up to 3D printer, use it to code with,” Carlile said.

So as he gears up for another school year, his students will get to see technology through a fresh lens.

“These are the tools you use to so something of greater value,” Carlile said. “For me it's teaching. For them its hopefully changing the world.”

Carlile was able to purchase the glasses thanks to a grant from the PHM Education Foundation.

Google Glass is still in the testing phase, so it is not available to the public at this time. As a “Google Explorer” Carlile will give suggestions to the company about how teachers can benefit from the technology.
